B.D. Trading Aquarium Sand

In 2000 and 2001 we travelled to the Peruvian Amazon on a fish collecting expedition and observed that without exception the substrates of the rivers were sand, going someway to explaining the incredible diversity of bottom dwelling species and the specialist feeding habits of many catfish and stingrays in that they depend on a soft riverbed. Another observation of the amazonian sand was that even at depths of over a meter thick, it did not compact hence no harmful gas and bacteria build up.

With this in mind, we set about supplying a similar product for the U.K. aquatic market. However most grades of sand available either compacted over time or were not p.H stable or did not match visually. After extensive research we came up with a p.H stable product of identical colour to the amazonian sand and most importantly it had a specific grain structure which meant that it did not compact over time in aquarium conditions thus ensuring livestock safety.

Coupled with the fact that this sand has no sharp particles for which to damage mouths and gills of feeding fish, it also had one extra point in its favour ie. When placed in the aquarium, the light from above reflected back and gave a far brighter look than say had gravel been used. Further more the sand was proven to be safe for use in all aquaria inc marine.
